During the previous ten years the staff of Design Specific were responsible for the running and technical output of the industrial consultancy unit based in the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The work of the unit ranged from the design and manufacturing special purpose machinery, to the production of rapid prototyping of models. The Design Specific staff were involved in over thirty consultancy projects for the construction, vacuum pumps, gas authorities, water authorities and major stress analysis for the likes of Siemens. It is this background of consistent high quality analytical and creative design work that has been fed into the products of Design Specific and has made the company the major innovator in the disability sector.

The initial concept must be credited to the manufacturer of the first Dental Platform; they called it a ‘ramp’, at the Royal Neuro-Disability Hospital Putney. It was probably dated about 1985 (Picture of old unit) but at the refurbishment of the whole clinical area in 1998 the staff of the University were contracted to design and supply a new and improved unit. (Picture of new unit) So successful has this unit been that as the centerpiece of equipment the staff was awarded Dental Team of the Year 1999. The staff of Design Specific was wholly responsible for this work. The monitoring of the work at the hospital, and the upgrades freely given to them, has enabled Design Specific to continually keep abreast of the changing demands in this most critical environment. Our platforms are tried tested honed in design over years of use. The inevitable redesign of the first unit resulted in the world first Dental Platform to be commercially marketed, the first going to Australia in 2000. Subsequent designs have all benefited form the extensive background of the Design Specific experience and the knowledge of the demands to be met. Over the past five years Design Specific has pioneered the case for the disadvantaged disabled person and it is gratifying to see the tide begin to turn in favour of this group.Richard Fletcher MSc, CEng, MIEE
